Pregnant women in Taiwan are advised to carefully review their domestic insurance policy before traveling abroad, as many scenarios are not covered internationally, our sister newspaper the Commercial Times reports.
Pregnant women traveling abroad are classified as a higher risk group, a spokesman for an insurance company said. There is little chance that they may be reimbursed for an abortion, for example, because such a situation is often not clearly stated in the policies for overseas travel.
If the traveler needs emergency medical care while abroad, the emergency has to happen within 180 days of the contract's effective start date and under the conditions that the contracted party has never used the same emergency service before, in order to apply for reimbursement. Casualties caused by hypertension when abroad, for example, would not be covered if the insurance owner died six months before the contract came into effect.
Insurance companies also do not cover death resulting from suicide.
