'WORDS, WORDS, words! I'm so sick of words!"
These are the opening lyrics of the song "Show Me" written by Alan Jay Lerner for "My Fair Lady."
When it comes to College of Marin providing funds to benefit the students after the breakdown of its relationship with the COM Foundation, I, too, am sick of words.
While the college awaits the final audit of the foundation's books, the following actions are needed:
? Arranging for "emergency funds" to be made available for students either through the college or through other sources. The college didn't even put a referral message naming other funding sources on the foundation's phone; it just shut down the office.
? Arranging with other groups ? service clubs, for example ? to provide scholarships for COM students to augment any college funds that are available for scholarships
? Adopting a formal policy clearly delineating future fundraising responsibilities for the college and the foundation. Raising money for programs and capital projects can be done through the advancement department; money for scholarships and other direct student needs through the foundation.
? Hiring an experienced person to run the newly formed advancement department.
? Sending Cathy Summa Wolfe, the college's outstanding public relations administrator, to the Fundraising School (a division of the University of
Indiana) when its basic course is given in San Francisco since the president is making her position part of the advancement department.? Soliciting names of community members with experience in fundraising who might be interested in serving on a new foundation board when it is formed
? Providing periodic reports, preferably monthly as we near the end of the school year, to college board members, students and the public regarding the progress being made
? Terminate the recent contract the college president negotiated with Margaret Elliott, the former executive director of the foundation, to act as a consultant for fundraising. Financial arrangements with former foundation employees until completion of an audit clarifies how funds were spent are inappropriate.
Many students depend upon the scholarships that are given out in the spring for the following school year. For many it means whether or not they can afford to continue their educations. Donors, rightfully so, have currently closed their checkbooks because they don't know what provisions, if any, the college has made to ensure scholarships will be given.
It's time to show not only me but the students and the community what is being done to ensure scholarships and other needed funds will be available for College of Marin students.
Show us now.
